Toddler Talk

I love how creative he is. He decided that his road needed a mountain so he made one for his jeep to climb!

It has been a very long time since I have done Toddler Talk, but I want to remember some of the cute things Mathias has been saying this last little while, and since this is my journal/scrapbook this is where it gets written.

A couple of months ago Mathias told me, "Look mom, the moon turned on his lights." He would always point out the moon during the day and when he saw it at night one time, that is what he said. I love to see how his little head thinks.

A couple of weeks ago Mathias asked me to play cars with him. I have pretty much given up on playing cars with him for a few reasons.
1) he gives you a certain car to play with and then takes it away from you and plays with it himself
2) he basically ends up playing on his own like 1 minute after you sit down to play with him.
So when he asked me to play cars with him I told him "no" and his response totally took me off guard. He said, "Oh c'mon mom, it will be fun!" with a little convincing voice. I laughed pretty good at that one.

At around the same time Dev went to clean off his face and Mathias told him, "That's not fair dad!" Seriously, where is he coming up with these?

The other day Dev was bouncing Mathias on his lap and Mathias said. "Wow, you are making me dizzy, dad." I don't think he even knows what that means or where he got it from. Just goes to show you that they listen to everything that you say.

They are building some new buildings over by where we live and as we were passing it today he says

M: look mom, there is a crane truck
Me: yup there sure is
M: He is going to lift our house up

He also saw a tractor and said:

M: look mom there is a tractor
Me: yup
M: He is looking for potato bugs in the dirt
Me: oh is he
M: yup potato bugs like dirt

Seriously, he is way to smart for his own good. I love how he knows what cranes do. Such a little boy!

Another thing he has been saying a lot lately to get out of stuff is, "That's enough for me, yeah."
He says this when he doesn't want to eat anymore because he just wants to play with his toys. He will also say "that is enough for mom" when I am doing something like helping him brush his teeth or wash his face.

Something else kinda funny is when he says something and you don't here him or can't understand him and ask him "what?" he says "no, not what" and repeats whatever it is that he says.

Oh, and another cute thing he did today was on the way home I started singing along to one of those annoying catchy commercials in the car and Mathias chimed right in and sang their phone number. He totally knew it. That is when you know they play those commercials too much.

This does not have much to do with cute things he said but more about how stinking smart my little guy is. Dev just asked me if we should start to get Mathias ready for B-E-D( actually spelling it out) and Mathias came running up to me saying, "I can't take a nap right now!" (he calls his nap and bedtime both a nap) He totally knew what we were talking about. So much for spelling things out!

more toddler talk

This was the conversation I had with Mathias while driving down the freeway the other day.

Mathias: look mom, there's a motorcycle
me: there sure is
Mathias: look, wearing a helmet
me: that is right, he sure is
Mathias: he's smart

YES! IT IS WORKING! HE REALLY IS LISTENING TO WHAT WE TELL HIM!!

Toddler Talk

Posted by Picasa

It seems Mathias talks the most while we are in the car. He is such a smart little bugger and picks up on things pretty fast. His favorite things to point out while we are in the car are:
  • windmills (by the point of the mountain)
  • power plants (he learned his first one at the mouth of Provo Canyon)
  • airplanes
  • the sun
  • merican flag (American flag, he learned this over 4th and 24th of July)
  • moon
  • helicopter
  • cement truck
  • pick up truck (and yes he says it just like that)
  • dump truck (I love that he knows the difference in all these trucks)
  • semi trucks (and yes that is what he calls them)
  • motorcycle
  • scooter (he also knows the difference between the two when he sees them)
  • jeeps
  • pine tree (he learned this at the gardens at Thanksgiving Point when we went with our fam)
  • firetruck
  • police car (one lives in our complex)
  • allabance (ambulance)
  • train
  • water fountain (as you enter or leave Pleasant Grove they have one)
  • fire hydrant (this is his new favorite to point out for some reason)
  • mountains
  • horse trailer (not sure where or when he learned that one)
  • four wheelers or motorcylces on a trailer (he gets pretty excited about this. He will also tell you that the truck is pulling the trailer.)
  • school bus (and a normal bus)
  • fast car (sadly, he even says this when he hears a ricer's fart pipe because he thinks it's fast. It makes Devin cry a little inside)
Some of my favorite things Mathias has said recently are:

Mathias: mom there's a airplane
me: yup
Mathias: hi airplane
after a second...
Mathias: bye airplane, have a nice day.
I laughed out loud when I heard him say that, I have no idea where he picked it up from. (Dev's note: my dad says that whenever we leave my parent's house, along with "write if you find work")

Monday, while we went on a walk with his new wagon :
Mathias: mom there's a helicopter
me: there sure is
A few minutes later
Mathias: where did the helicopter go mom?
Me: I am not sure
Mathias: I think he went home for lunch.

Really, you just put that together all by yourself? Ok, you can stop growing up NOW!!

The other day Dev was taking Mathias to Kelly's so she could watch him while we went to work. He got to the stop light by our house when he realized he forgot the diaper bag and turned around to go back and get it.
Mathias: why we going back home, daddy?
Dev: because I forgot your diaper bag
Mathias: oh.
I love how he is suddenly talking in complete sentences. It just amazes me how fast he learns!

That is all I can think of for now, I had a bunch written down so I would not forget them but Dev threw it away :( (Dev's note: Bad Devin! Bad! Bad!)

Toddler talk

Mathias : love you (with one of Dev's shoes on)
Tanessa: I love you Mathias
Mathias: love you mommy (comes and gives me a big kiss on the mouth then grabs Dev's other shoe and puts it on)
Buh bye mommy, love you (reaches for the door trying to leave)

This is exactly what we do in the mornings when we are all leaving for the day, however this was in the afternoon. Apparently he wanted to go somewhere.

Toddler Talk

Mathias sticks out his tongue all the time while he is doing something lately. I just love it and think it is so cute.

Mathias' vocabulary is just growing everyday. It amazes me all the time. Yesterday Devin and I were talking and I said "obnoxious" and Mathias copied me, we both thought that was pretty cute. He will still copy just about everything he hears when the mood hits him just right.

The phrases he has been using a lot this week are:

"What dat" or "What dis." He says this to EVERYTHING! He will ask it even if he knows what it is, like he just wants to hear us say it.

"Mommy have it" or "Daddy have it." Depends on the object or the day as to who gets what or everything. He is very particular about who gets what and gets upset when the other tries to get it from him.

No______. He is finally telling us no but it is not to bad yet. It is mostly to food that he does not want. Oh, and don't even get me started on that. He thinks he is going to live on peanut butter and jelly or honey sandwiches and fruit. I can't seem to get him to eat anything else. Any suggestions?

He can now sing the ABCs from the beginning but usually leaves out the "k" for some reason. He will sing along to the radio too, even if he does not know what they are saying; he will just hold out a note. I love this, there is nothing cuter than hearing him sing.

He is suddenly not shy AT ALL. When we go to the store he will say hi to everyone we pass until they say it back. Last Saturday at Devin's soccer game, he went on the step below me and sat right next to a lady and just started telling her about the big trucks and cars. It was cute, but kinda scary - I better keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't talk to the wrong people. Anyways, I just love the growing vocabulary of my growing boy and thought I would share.

Toddler talk

Some explanation about his clothing. He had messed his britches so we had to throw a load of jeans in the wash resulting in him wearing his pajama bottoms. While I was typing this up he had apparently put on his rain boots (and on the right feet I might add, if even by accident) and came in here to tell me he wanted to go outside. I thought the outfit was just too much and had to take a picture or two.

Mathias has become such the jabber box lately. He will copy just about everything you say and when the mood hits him just right he will copy every sound you make as well. He is starting to put three word sentences together.
"ride dad jeep"
"ride momma's car"
"watch monster trucks peas" or "monster trucks on"
"more e-o peas"
"go away Puka"
These are just some of the few I can remember right now.

He can count to ten the whole way through and in order all by himself. We are currently working on counting to twenty (which he mostly has down). He is also our little singer. He can sing "Twinkle twinkle" the whole way through all by himself and some of "Old Macdonald." The latest thing we have been working on his the alphabet. So far he starts from "H" and goes the whole way through (in order) he even sings "now I know my abc's, next time wont you sing with me." I have not caught this on the video camera yet (every time I pull out the video recorder, Mathias hams it up and just wants to see himself on it saying, "see Mat") but I am working on it, I promise. I can not believe how quickly he has grown and how fast he learns. It amazes me everyday!

Toddler Talk

Car has continued to be Mathias' favorite word, he points them out wherever we are. He has also added a new favorite word this week: baby. Anywhere he sees one, whether it be at the store, church, magazine, or tv he points them out and says "baby." Everyone says this is him hinting at us that he wants a sibling. What is funny is that not everyone he points out is a baby, some of them are his age or older! Devin usually responds to that by saying, "Careful who you call baby, son. He could beat you up!"

This week he is also learning to ask "please" and say what he wants. For example, when I was getting ready the other day he threw his ball into the tub and then said "uh oh" and looked at me. So I said "what do you say?" and he said "peas ball." So I got it for him and he said " thank you." He says please for anything he wants and thank you to almost anything. I swear he is the most polite little 20 month old anyone has seen.

Some of the new words he has learned this week are:

Bite (when he wants a bite of our food)
play
tooth (for toothbrush)
big boy
cow
moo
bell
choo choo
train

That is all I can think of.

Toddler Talk

This week has been pretty good for learning some new words. He will basically try to repeat everything you tell him. Sometimes it sounds pretty good, others you just kinda guess. His all-time favorite word this week is "car" with a little Boston-like accent, "caw". He has known this word for a while put this week he points to every single car that he sees and says "caw." Also, to him there are only cars, not trucks or jeeps or vans - just cars. You can get into a back and forth war of trying to get him to say truck or jeep, but he will just keep saying "caw." What a stubborn kid, I have no idea where he gets that from.

Some of the words that he says pretty clearly this week are

bear
turtle
mouth
nose
ear
gonk gonk (honk honk while tugging your nose)
bubbles
all done or all gone (he doesn't say it very well but tries, and we know what it means)

He has also been imitating the kissing noise "mmmaah" a lot lately. I think this is sooo cute!

Toddler Talk

The last couple of weeks Mathias has been trying to repeat everything we say. Now the fun begins and we really have to watch what we say. Some of this weeks new words are :

wa wa = water
car
more
see you (when we are leaving)
sunshine (my moms cat)
football
out
milk
go kitty (no kitty)
two (as in when I am counting to three to get him to stop doing something, I will say one and then he will say two.)
there go (as in there you go)

And as always I am sure I am forgetting some.

Toddler Talk

Isn't this just a great picture!

We have not learned too many new words this week. However, Mathias will try to repeat most words you say. The new words this week are:
gacker = cracker
haw-e = Holly (his cousin)
eye= He will say this while pointing to his eye
bir = bird
dow = down
good guy = we think this means good bye.
ank oo(or something like it) = thank you
pea= please
I am sure there are more, it is just too late to think!
Although, on a side note, he has learned to give rocks this week, you know where you hit your fist with someone else's. He is also learning "all done" in sign language as well as "thank you"!

Toddler Talk

Mathias has finally learned some new words over the last couple of weeks.

wuf wuf = what a dog says
gak gak = what a duck says.
nigh nigh = night night
buhbye
baby
ball
bippy = sippy
hi & hey
nononono
go
kitty
beow = meow
p.u. = as in stinky (he says this while plugging his nose)
Grandma Brower swears he says "grandpa" but we haven't confirmed

Once and only once he said "hey buddy". He repeated it after I said it to one of his little friends.

This is not really talking but he has been learning some sign language too. Actually, he has known for a while but just this week he put two of them together. He now does "more" and "please" together. On a side note, if we tell him "no" to something, he will sign "please." What a smart little bugger, how can you say no to that!
